8th April - International Roma Day: Still fighting for our Rights

The European Roma Information Office (ERIO) would like to join Roma communities
throughout Europe in celebrating the 8th April, International Roma Day. On this day we
unite with Roma communities around the world in celebrating the Roma culture and
remembering the long fight of Roma for their recognition.
But the history of European Roma is not only one of their fight against racism and social
exclusion. It is also a history of the development and consolidation of a non-territorial
nation in Europe. Over the centuries, Roma language, tradition and culture have not only
become a part but have enriched the European culture. Here, the resistance of Roma
against the Nazi and other authoritarian regimes as contribution to the development and
consolidation of peace and democracy in the European Union should be acknowledged.
An acknowledgment of Roma’s contribution to the construction of a more democratic
Europe is the last Resolution of the European Parliament of 31 January 2008 calling upon
the European Commission to shape a Community Action Plan on Roma Inclusion. This
would be a big step towards Roma inclusion. In 2008, declared by the European
Commission as “European Year of the Intercultural Dialogue – 2008”, the realisation of
equal opportunities remains the goal for the largest parts of Roma. Given the extreme
patterns of social exclusion and discrimination faced by Roma, they are not equal
partners in such societal dialogue. This remains the main challenge for European
institutions and especially for national governments. Nevertheless, ERIO believes that
effective inclusion policies can be successful only with the full participation of Roma
themselves whose fight for recognition and equality should be recognised on this
International Roma Day.

Que este dia sirva para recordar , mas muito mais para afirmar a nossa presença e a nossa luta de séculos.Agora,que muitos de nós estão mais atentos e sabemos o terreno que pisamos,é bom que nenhum de nós tenha medo da Evolução.E apesar de o mundo disfarçar que nos aceita e que não tem preconceitos contra nós, sabemos que não é assim.Mas eles não sabem muitas vezes que quando pensam estar a falar mal de nós com alguém que não lhes parece Cigano/Rrom,esse alguém É Cigano/a!E então aí o jogo muda.Também quero acrescentar que isto é tudo muito bonito mas...em Portugal o que é que é feito pelos Ciganos?Temos direitos como qualquer outro português...ou será que não?Eu sou uma priveligiada no meio disto tudo,afinal foi-me dada a hipótese de estudar,pela família.E não é fácil ser Mulher e Cigana!E muito menos andar no meio de uma sociedade que os homens pailhos pensam controlar... Nunca fiz alarde de mim e confesso que muitas pessoas que comigo convivem nem lhes passa pela cabeça quem eu sou.Que atitude tomariam se soubessem?Acredito que nada mudaria,no entanto desconfio sempre...e com razão,a discriminação é muita em muitos lados!Mas meus amigos, o caminho é este:instrução e oportunidades.O mundo é nosso se quisermos.Saúdo todos neste dia e em todos os outros dias.O tempo de viragem é chegado.Nada a temer.Vamos continuar a lutar pelo que nos é devido!!
Quero igualmente deixar um apreço especial pelos Calons,pois somos o ramo mais abandonado de todos,então os Calons portugueses nem se fala,este dia é Nosso com todo o direito.OPRÉ CALÉ!E também pela "pequena" mas existente costela Sintí que há em mim hehe não esqueço jamais.
